Bus station, benches in the park, under the bridge – a no go! Abiding the law and having a right mind means taking the subject of sleeping in Maribor serious-ly. Nonetheless, the town offers a number of comfortable and warm beds in hostels, hotels, suites and even a camp at the foot of the Pohorje hills.
Baščaršija Ethno House
Poštna ulica 8
Opening hours: Monday–Thursday: 10.00–23.00, Friday–Saturday: 10.00–24.00
Even though it is located in the heart of Maribor, it offers all the warmth and kindness of the main square of Sarajevo, after which this house is named. After a restful night in comfortable and charmingly furnished rooms or suites, real Turkish coffee awaits you, served in original Turkish coffee pots and “fildžanih” (very small mugs) sweetened with Turkish delight. It most certainly is a unique experience.
Poštna ulica 3
Making sure you don’t miss the four neatly furnished rooms, you have to examine with care the writings above the doors on Poštna Street. Rooms with two or three beds, a common room and elegantly equipped bathroom are hidden on the other side of the courtyard and provide peaceful sleep as well as breakfast at the next door bistro, where you will drink your morning coffee on one of the most coffee-loving streets of Maribor.
Pekarna Youth Hostel
Ob železnici 16
The hostel on the right bank of the Drava River, in the heart of Maribor’s alternative scene, but still only a few minutes walk form the town centre is a part of the Pekarna Cultural Centre. You enter through glass sliding doors on the courtyard side of the building, then up to the 2nd floor, where you and your heavy backpack will be taken by the elevator. Hostel is in (for now) the only renovated building of the complex, offers four-bed rooms with en-suite or attic studio or suite in which you will not have to share the kitchen and the bathroom with other guests. If you have been on the road for quite a while, you will be happy to find out that you can use the washing machine with a dryer and for the thrifty and picky we have a well-equipped kitchen. A big and bright dining room features a television, computers and free Wi-Fi access. In a comfortable club space, you will be able to meet fellow travellers and participate in themed social events. Follow-ing a glassed corridor will lead you to the sunny terrace where a bird’s perspective of the happen-ings at Pekarna will unfold to you. Different photographic exhibitions always cover the walls of the hostel and the wall-papers offer the nostalgic look of how the building looked before the re-furbishment in 2011. For the time being, the hostel has a sterile feel to it, but we are sure that it will soon absorb the spirit of Pekarna.
A young traveller from Ireland said this about Pekarna Youth Hostel: It caters the sense of the 21st century … but with the kindness of the good old times.
